Valar Space is a Spanish aerospace startup building a SaaS flight-dynamics platform for satellites. In practice, its software works like a “Google Maps for satellites”: it calculates trajectories, avoids collisions, and optimizes in-orbit operations automatically. With an operator-less approach, it lets operators fully outsource flight mechanics, becoming a key infrastructure layer within the New Space ecosystem.

— 01 · THE STARTING POINT
Structuring the finance function of a deep-tech startup
When we started working with Valar, the company was at an early stage, with a product still in development and a strong component of technological risk. The technology had reached an intermediate level of maturity — validated in relevant environments, but not yet in real-world client use. That meant constant investment, technical focus, and financial planning aligned with product milestones.
On top of that, the team was small, which made it necessary to outsource key functions such as finance so the CEO could focus on developing the business and the strategic side.
“When it comes to deep tech, the challenge isn’t only making the technology work. It’s also financing the path between a validated prototype and the first real client without straining the cash position.”
— 02 · WHAT WE DID
A comprehensive financial partner for a space-sector startup
At The Startup CFO, we took on the role of comprehensive financial partner for Valar, covering CFO, financing, accounting, and payroll support.
The goal was to give the company greater financial control and allow the founding team to delegate this function without losing visibility.
Given the size of the team, the collaboration went beyond the traditional finance function, moving into decisions that directly affect the sustainability of the business.

Tax structure and key hires
Optimizing the tax structure and assessing critical hires for the business.
— 03 · FINANCING
Public funding to accelerate technology development
One of the most significant milestones was securing a grant of approximately €200,000 from the Comunidad de Madrid (Madrid’s regional government). This public funding was key to supporting the platform’s technology development. The project was executed and justified correctly, allowing the company to advance its product maturity and bring it closer to a real client environment.
In deep-tech startups, where the leap from prototype to commercial application is especially demanding, this type of funding can be decisive in accelerating development without putting too much strain on the cash position.

CFO, financing, accounting, and payroll in one service
Today, Valar has a solid financial foundation that lets it operate with greater control and clarity. It has financed its technology development, advanced its product maturity, and built a more sustainable business model, with a structure that supports strategic decision-making at a key growth stage.
This case shows how, in deep-tech startups with high technical complexity, the finance function is not just operational support: it’s a tool for building the business. When technology, product, and market evolve at the same time, having a partner that combines execution with strategic vision lets the team focus on developing technology and bringing it to market on a stronger footing.
