ToggleInvesting in knowledge: Santander’s global commitment to startups
With a strong international presence and a vast network of clients, Banco Santander is one of the most influential financial institutions in the world. But its role in the startup ecosystem goes beyond banking services, it invests in knowledge.
Through Santander X, the bank has built a global platform that supports more than 7,000 startups with access to funding, mentorship, and high-quality educational content. Unlike traditional banking initiatives that focus only on financing, Santander has prioritized training founders, scaling their knowledge, and fostering a network of experts who can help them navigate their financial challenges.
At The Startup CFO, we are proud to be part of this effort, providing financial training, mentorship, and strategic guidance to early-stage companies. Since 2023, we have collaborated with Santander on structured mentorship programs, online learning initiatives, and in-person events at Santander Work Cafés, helping thousands of entrepreneurs develop financial strategies tailored to their growth stage.
Personalized mentorship through Santander X100 program
Banco Santander’s community Santander X, offers a global support network for startups at various stages, from early-stage teams to scale-ups and high-impact ventures. Within this initiative, Santander X100 serves as an exclusive acceleration program, where 80 to 100 top startups per year receive mentorship, training, and resources to scale their businesses.
Since joining Santander X100 as a financial mentor in 2023, The Startup CFO has provided structured mentorship to dozens of startups, guiding them through the complexities of fundraising, financial planning, and investor relations.
How our mentorship process works
We take a hands-on, structured approach to mentorship, ensuring each startup receives personalized financial guidance throughout their time in the program.
- Kickoff session: A deep dive into the startup’s financial situation, identifying key challenges and opportunities.
- Follow-up mentorship: Two additional sessions where we track progress, refine financial strategies, and help founders apply best practices.
- Closing Session: A final meeting to assess the impact of the mentorship, ensuring each startup is equipped with clear next steps.
This process ensures that founders not only receive theoretical knowledge but also leave with actionable financial strategies tailored to their business model.
By combining individualized mentorship with structured financial education, we have helped startups in Santander X100 better understand their financing options, improve their investor readiness, and make informed strategic decisions.
Scaling financial education: Online courses via LMS Santander
Beyond one-on-one mentorship, Banco Santander has made financial education accessible at scale through its LMS Santander online learning platform. This initiative provides thousands of startups worldwide with on-demand courses on business and finance, helping them gain practical knowledge at their own pace.
At The Startup CFO, we have contributed by developing and delivering expert-led financial courses:
- Introduction to startup finance
- Introduction to startup funding
- Professional financial management
By making this content available globally to more than 7,000 startups, Santander is removing barriers to financial knowledge and allowing founders to gain the expertise they need to manage their businesses effectively regardless their location.
This initiative ensures that financial education is not just limited to those who can attend live sessions, but instead, becomes a long-term, scalable resource for thousands of entrepreneurs worldwide.
Bringing the ecosystem together: Work Café events and community engagement
One of Banco Santander’s most innovative initiatives for startups is Work Café, a network of co-working spaces integrated into Santander branches, where entrepreneurs can collaborate, access banking services, and participate in startup-focused events.
Many startups, such as Reveni, have leveraged Work Café spaces as their first business hubs, benefiting not only from flexible workspace solutions but also from training programs and expert discussions held in these locations.
Our role at Santander Work Café events
In November 2024, The Startup CFO participated in a roundtable discussion on startup finance, hosted at a Work Café branch. This event brought together:
- Startup founders, sharing real-world experiences and financial challenges.
- Venture capital investors, offering insights into the fundraising process.
- Financial service providers, discussing tailored solutions for early-stage businesses.
By hosting these events in Work Cafés, Santander is not just providing physical space for startups, it is creating a learning and networking environment, where entrepreneurs can connect with industry experts and gain practical insights that directly impact their business success. Given the strong response to these events, The Startup CFO will be leading another session in the coming months, with many more planned for the future as part of our ongoing collaboration with Santander.
A commitment to the future of startup education
Banco Santander has proven that supporting startups requires more than just financial products. It requires a deep commitment to education, mentorship, and ecosystem-building.
Through our collaboration, we have helped Santander:
- Deliver high-quality financial mentorship to early-stage startups.
- Scale financial education through online learning, reaching thousands of founders worldwide.
- Create valuable networking and learning opportunities through Work Café events.
These initiatives bridge the gap between banking and entrepreneurship, ensuring that startups not only have access to financing but also understand how to manage it effectively.
At The Startup CFO, we look forward to continuing this partnership, expanding training initiatives, mentorship programs, and financial education efforts to reach even more startups. As Santander continues to develop new financial products tailored to high-growth companies, we are excited to contribute our expertise to help shape solutions that truly align with the needs of the startup ecosystem.
