— 01 · STARTING POINT
A relationship that began before the formal collaboration
The story with NOVA began before there was even a direct professional relationship. In 2016, Jaime Medina, Managing Partner at The Startup CFO, joined the community as one of its first members, when the project was still at a very early stage.
Years later, in 2020, we reconnected at a key moment for the company. The founding team had a much more defined vision: to build the best talent network in the world and turn that community into a key tool for companies to attract and connect with high-potential profiles.
By the end of that year, we started working together formally, supporting NOVA as CFO both in Spain and at group level, including its international structure.
— 02 · WHAT WE DID
A finance function to support a global community
At The Startup CFO, we helped NOVA build a financial foundation capable of supporting its growth, international expansion and evolving business model.
The goal was to bring control, structure and strategic visibility to a company combining community, technology, recruiting and B2B services, with increasingly complex financial needs.
External CFO and finance structure
Financial support at Spain and group level, helping the founding team with financial management and strategic decision-making.
Public funding and innovation
Development of a public funding strategy, including the Innovative SME certification and support in R&D projects.
Strategic collaboration
Support in capitalization initiatives, investor relations and special projects linked to the company’s growth.
— 03 · FUNDING
Public funding and innovation projects
One of the main focuses of the collaboration was public funding. Given NOVA’s innovative nature, there was a natural fit with instruments focused on R&D, innovation and cost structure optimization.
The work included obtaining the Innovative SME certification, optimizing deductions and social security benefits, and developing more complex projects such as R&D funding initiatives that required coordination with technical teams, certification bodies and auditors.
— 04 · RESULTS
A relationship that evolves with the company
Long-term
Formal collaboration started in 2020, with a previous relationship
R&D funding
Project developed and validated through a final technical report.
New CFO stage
Reactivation of the CFO and accounting service in 2025
Over time, the relationship with NOVA moved beyond the traditional client-provider model. The Startup CFO not only supported the company’s financial development, but also participated in joint initiatives across community, training, content and events.
This case shows how a finance relationship can evolve alongside a startup’s growth. When there is trust, accumulated knowledge and a shared vision, the role of the finance partner goes far beyond execution: it becomes a strategic piece in supporting each stage of the project.
